Arrowhead Ceramic Lagging Solves the Problems of Belt Slippage and Pulley Lagging Wear

Overview and History

ASGCO’s patent pending design of our unique Arrowhead Ceramic Lagging provides solutions to problems experienced with conveyor belt slippage around the drive pulley and severe wear problem on snub and bend pulleys. ASGCO has developed a full range of pulley lagging from ceramic, drive rubber and non-drive rubber lagging that is available in both abrasion resistant SBR and MSHA grade rubber for conveyor pulleys from slow belts all the way through to high-speed, high load belts.

With the current global trend of increasing prices and production requirements in coal, copper, cement, gold, bauxite and many other minerals and aggregates, there is a growing need for a maintenance-free, and reliable pulley lagging to ensure the plant’s conveyor belts run to their highest efficiency.

One of the challenges in selecting the proper pulley lagging is that each conveyor belt has its own characteristics. With the increase in popularity of ceramic pulley lagging to solve the problems of conveyor belt slipping in wet or cold conditions or solve the problems of wearing prematurely on high tension snub and bend pulleys. Ceramic pulley lagging has become a necessary product in every plant.

Identifying the need in the industry for a better ceramic pulley lagging, ASGCO examined the problems with existing pulley lagging. Combining our company experience, engineers set out to design an improved pulley lagging. It was agreed that a good pulley lagging:

  • Must operate in both dry and wet conditions

  • Require a minimum force to drive the conveyor belt

  • Is maintenance free

  • Tiles stay embedded in the rubber

  • Material does not build up on the pulley

  • Is simple to install

  • Excellent abrasion resistance

  • Durable design

Tile Design Features

Arrowhead ceramic pulley lagging provides the solution when conventional rubber lagging fails to correct belt slippage and wears prematurely. The unique Arrowhead ceramic is designed for the highest drive factors unlike conventional square tiles. In the field and laboratory testing has proven that Arrowhead ceramic has up to 4 times the coefficient of friction verses standard rubber drive lagging. It has also proven that its abrasion resistance and wear ability can be more then 8 times that of standard rubber lagging.

The unique tile is fully encapsulated in rubber on all five sides to assure an excellent bond between the rubber and the tile. It also maintains better adhesion when compared to conventional square tiles due to the radiused curved edges of the tiles. Laboratory testing has proven that there is a better bonding adhesion to a curve surface than to a 90 degree point as seen on conventional square ceramic lagging tiles.

Improved belt tracking due to the Arrowhead patterns self-cleaning ability, which reduces material build up and thereby eliminates the major source of misalignment, has also been seen as a major advantage to the design of the tiles. On all major drive pulleys, most pulley manufacturers will recommend either diamond or herringbone style lagging for the need of self-cleaning and less buildup. Arrowhead lagging is the only ceramic lagging that provides diagonal grooving to allow water and material to shed away from the pulley.
